Valid Arguments as True Conditionals

چکیده

Abstract This paper explores an idea of Stoic descent that is largely neglected nowadays, the argument valid when conditional formed by conjunction its premises as antecedent and conclusion consequent true. As will be argued, once some basic features our naïve understanding validity are properly spelled out, a suitable account conditionals adopted, equivalence between arguments true makes perfect sense. The outlined here, which displays one coherent way to articulate intuition, accords with standard formal treatments deductive encompasses independently grounded characterization inductive validity.

Some arguments are probably valid: Syllogistic reasoning as communication

Syllogistic reasoning lies at the intriguing intersection of natural and formal reasoning, of language and logic. Syllogisms comprise a formal system of reasoning yet use natural language quantifiers, and invite natural language conclusions. How can we make sense of the interplay between logic and language? We develop a computational-level theory that considers reasoning over concrete situation...

Priority Arguments via True stages

We describe a variation of Ash’s η-system, and give a new proof of Ash’s metatheorem. As an application, we prove a generalization of Ash and Knight’s theorem on pairs of structures.

True premises , false conclusion , yet valid

Here are two widely accepted assumptions about truth-conditional semantics for natural language: 1. It is truth-preserving. That is to say, if a NL semantic framework assigns the value 'true', relative to a given parameter of context c, to sentences S1,..., Sn, and if sentence S is a logical consequence of the set {S1,...,Sn}, then, relative to the same c, the framework should also assign the v...

Conditionals as attitude reports

Most theories of conditionals and attitudes do not analyze either phenomenon in terms of the other. A few view attitude reports as a species of conditionals (e.g. Stalnaker 1984, Heim 1992). Based on evidence from Kalaallisut, this paper argues for the opposite thesis: conditionals are a species of attitude reports. The argument builds on prior findings that conditionals are modal topic-comment...

Counterfactuals as Strict Conditionals

This paper presents a new deductive argument for the strict conditional analysis of counterfactual conditionals, as against the dominant variably strict analysis due to Robert Stalnaker (1968) and David Lewis (1973). Counterfactual conditionals belong to a broader linguistic family of counterfactual modals. The argument offered here turns on facts about the logical interaction of counterfactual...
